Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder of the brain and nervous system. In 2023, there were 3,291 deaths from Parkinson’s disease in Florida among all age groups. Parkinson’s disease causes nerve cells in the brain to weaken, become damaged, and die. This can lead to symptoms that include problems with movement, tremor, stiffness, and impaired balance. As symptoms progress, people may have difficulty walking, talking or completing other simple tasks. In 2023, there were 3,033 hospitalizations from Parkinson’s disease and 827 emergency department visits from Parkinson’s disease in Florida among those aged 65 and older.
